The following information and statistics are a result of the March 2002 SCTP Tourism Industry Survey, work of the consultants and research staff for the SCTP Business & Marketing Plan

The current situation for the tourism industry on the Lower Sunshine Coast
  • Lower Sunshine Coast hotel/motel room revenues grew 26% slower than the provincial average and 6% slower than the upper Sunshine Coast from 1996-2000
  • The summer season is the only time we exceed the provincial hotel/motel occupancy average of 74% with a 76% occupancy
  • Average annual occupancy 43%, compared to annual provincial average of 61%
  • This area has 404 tourism businesses offering 524 business services on the lower Sunshine Coast
  • Tourism accounts for 8% of the total labour force, 16% of the basic labour force and 6% of the total community income
  • Tourism the third largest contributor of the private sector after forestry and fishing
  • The total value of visitor expenditures on the Lower Sunshine Coast was approx. $58.6 million in 2001
  • Accommodation expenditures for the Lower Sunshine Coast are approximately $12.3 million annually
  • Tourism employment is equivalent to approximately 807 person years
  • The income attributable to this employment is estimated to be $20.4 million annually
  • Estimated direct and indirect jobs totalled 960 in 2001, while employment income totalled $26 million
