Sechelt Indian Band Self Employment Program


Concept
Community Futures, under the direction of the SIB Education Centre, provides training and ongoing business coaching to SIB members interested in exploring self-employment or strengthening their existing business.

History
Over the last 4.5 year's the Sechelt Indian Band and Community Futures have developed a relationship to utilize the services of Community Futures for the benefit of SIB members. Approximately 38 SIB members have been served by Community Futures during this time.

Referrals and Mentoring
SIB members are referred to Community Futures from the SIB education centre staff. Participants have one on one meetings with a business advisors to work through challenges of developing their business idea and completing a business plan. They also have access to the Community Futures Business Resource Centre as they develop their business plans.

Regular ongoing mentoring that includes business advice and coaching, has proven to be the effective means of supporting people new to self-employment. Mentoring assists clients in areas of; finding the least expensive source of funds for the venture, assessing market demand, developing and implementing marketing programs, developing appropriate financial management, identifying appropriate professional advisors, and advising ongoing business management issues. Business Advisors are: Sharon Anderchek, Jeff Howlett and Diane Hill.
